about

Grains is the result of many small things naturally collecting together over time, becoming something more significant as a whole. It started as two newly acquainted friends experimenting with synthesisers and samplers, with no concrete aim for what they were doing, apart from having fun. Our early musical exploration took us to all sorts of places, performing in house parties, restaurants, carparks, boats, and clubs. Post-lockdown, it seemed like everyone was keen to jam about and try new things - and so we suddenly saw ourselves become a band of five.

The tracks on this album were once ambient explorations which — through improvisational cultivation — have become totally new creations altogether.

How and Pans begin in meditative spaces, building into euphoric electronic grooves and lush, washy breakdowns. Unco pulses with synthetic rhythms flavoured with a more serious undercurrent, exposing the feeling of loneliness and shame that can be felt at the latent end of a wayward night out. Flying Saucer on the other hand, embraces imagination, embarking on a science fiction odyssey through wormholes and hyperspace. LOTAF brings the album to its heaviest, leaning full-force into the chaos of volcanic activity and overwhelming heat, complete with sirens blaring and falling ash. Finally, Succession follows in two parts, a seedling of hope that life will regenerate and endure despite the odds.

This album is our way of telling stories about nature and people without using words, to express wonderment, loss and regeneration as sound and music. It’s also simply an artifact of a place in time between friends, figuring out what sounds we can make together, trying stuff out and seeing what grows.
