about

During 2023, we were thrilled to work with RNZ's Claire Concannon to produce this soundtrack for an amazing podcast series called "Voice of Tangaroa".

The podcast explores the state of our oceans and the extraordinary variety of life that calls it home. It also explores the tireless work of New Zealand scientists who are tackling some of the challenges our oceans face.

Our approach to this soundtrack took us right back to the roots of Grains as an ambient-synth duo. For the project, we were provided with an amazing collection of hydrophone recordings, from the scritch-scratching of kina munching on kelp to the melancholic songs of marine mammals. These recordings greatly informed the sound design, and many made it into the final compositions as textural layers. We hope you enjoy listening to this sound track, and deeply encourage you to check out the podcast - there is so much to learn about the most vast and unique feature of our ocean planet, and it is presented beautifully in this series!
